Team Building

BTRC's one-day program Team Building, relies heavily on the research of Katzenback and Smith as presented in their books, The Wisdom of Teams and The Discipline of Teams, to distinguish between:
  • work groups and teams, and
  • pseudo teams, potential teams, real teams and high performing teams.

The 12-minute version of the training video Bolero is used to introduce the concept of teamwork versus team spirit.

BTRC references The Harvard Publishing article, The Discipline of Teams, by Katzenback and Smith (a very abridged version of The Wisdom of Teams), throughout the program and presents it to participants as a prework assignment. This article highlights some of the unique activities in which teams must engage in order to be effective and productive. In conjunction with the article, the training video, The Discipline of Teams - Innovative Project Teams, highlights the difficulties and challenges that teams face even when they are engaged in work that is highly compelling.

In Team Building, BTRC covers the classic stages of team development and the shifting role of the leader as teams mature. Given the critical nature of the "Forming Stage," BTRC engages participants in a range of "forming" activities that are directly transferable to the job. The training video, Fish, demonstrates the influence of operating principles/ground rules on team development and performance. BTRC uses Glenn Parker's Team Player Survey to help participants identify their behavioral predispositions when operating as part of a team.

Participants leave the program with a clear understanding of teams, how they operate, and what the leader must do to influence team performance.
