Performance Management

BTRC's one-day program, Performance Management, uses Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership II (SLII)¸ model as its foundation. This program focuses on:
  • Leadership Styles
  • Determining Employee Development Levels
  • Adapting Leadership Styles to Development Levels

The program enables managers to determine employee performance management requirements (development levels) by assessing employee competence (knowledge and skills) and commitment (motivation and confidence). The program further guides managers to use a range of leadership styles in order to accommodate varying levels of employee competence and commitment.

Among the methods BTRC uses to teach the SLII¸ model are:

  • the Leader Behavior Analysis II - Self instrument to determine participant leadership styles (prework)
  • the Leader Behavior Analysis II - Other instrument to secure feedback from the direct reports of participants regarding the frequency with which they use different leadership styles (prework)
  • video examples to practice performance analysis
  • the Situational Leadership Game - (a board game) to reinforce the matching of leadership style to development level.

Participants leave the program with:

  • a performance plan for increasing the competence and commitment levels of a least one direct report
  • ideas for managing up and across the organization.

This program is also offered in a two-day format. In this version, day one is presented as outlined above, and day two, entitled "Increasing Competence and Commitment" includes content from BTRC's half-day program, Accelerating Employee Development, and a half-day variation of BTRC's Discussing Performance.
